Article 27. Diacritic and other marks. No diacritic or other mark (such as an apostrophe), or ligature of the letters a and e (æ) or o and e (œ) is to be used in a scientific name; the hyphen is to be used only as specified in Article 32.5.2.4.3.

55   To this should be added that quotes are permitted to indicate a provisional generic name, when a new species is described, e.g., species b-us is described, but the author has no genus for it, so he adopts the name of a catch-all group, X-us and presents the new name as 'X-us' b-us. This usage reflects current taxonomic practice.
